Afleet Alex, the 6-5 favorite in the race, blew away the other 10 competitors to win the third leg of the Triple Crown by seven lengths in front of Andromeda's Hero.
It was the fifth consecutive year that a horse has won two of the three legs of the Triple Crown, but the first horse since Point Given in 2001 to win the Preakness and Belmont. (Related item: Preakness-Belmont double winners)
Giacomo, who won this year's Kentucky Derby and was third in the Preakness, finished seventh in the Belmont after leading with 440 yards to go.
Jockey Jeremy Rose, who helped save Afleet Alex from going down to the ground after a collision in the Preakness, had a less dangerous but an equally impressive ride Saturday.
Told all week that young jockeys have had a tendency to move their horses too early in the 1 ½ mile race, Rose certainly was not going to make that mistake.
In fact, it appeared briefly that Afleet Alex was running a little flat during early portions of the race. Rose and Afleet Alex were content to sit behind much of the field and ran eighth after one mile. Long-shot Pinpoint towed the field through a moderate pace early in the race. Giacomo, with Mike Smith aboard, was right off the leaders.
While many questioned Afleet Alex's ability to go 1 ½ miles, Rose was never worried that he wasn't going to have enough horse.
When the jockey asked his horse to make his move, the colt exploded and began weaving between horses and quickly passing them one by one.
'He was the best horse,' said Rose. 'I knew that if I didn't do something stupid, I was going to win this race. He's just that good.'
At the turn for home he seemed to find yet another gear and the only question in the last 150-200 yards was how big the winning margin would be.
'We expected this kind of performance,' said Afleet Alex trainer Tim Ritchey. 'I wasn't surprised he was that far back, but when he got rolling, it was a lot of fun.'
Afleet Alex, who finished the race in two minutes, 28.75 seconds, ran the fastest last quarter mile (24 2/5 seconds) since Arts and Letters in 1969. The winning time was well off Secretariat's record of 2:24 in 1973.
'I had the best horse, and I knew I had the fastest quarter mile when I needed it,' said Rose on NBC immediately after the race. 'The only thing that could get him beat was me so I stayed out of his way.'
Ritchey never panicked as Rose held his colt back until the proper moment.
'All I kept saying was 'be patient, be patient. Wait, wait, wait.' He just exploded. That was the plan.'
The only thing that didn't go according to the plan laid out by Ritchey and Rose this spring was sweeping the Triple Crown.
Ritchey said his jockey rode the 'three Triple Crown races like a Hall of Famer.'
But Rose was willing to shoulder any blame for failing to produce the 12th Triple Crown winner in Thoroughbred history and the first since Affirmed in 1978.
'He should be a Triple Crown winner, but I messed up or whatever,' Rose said.

Although there had been very few critics of Rose this spring, the jockey figured he had to be the one to blame.

'I say I messed up because I had the best horse,' Rose said. 'You can't blame Tim and you can't blame Afleet Alex. So, if you have to blame someone, blame me.'
Said Nick Zito, who trained Andromeda's Hero and won the race last year with Birdstone: 'It's an honor to be second to this great horse.'
Zito finished off a Triple Crown series to forget: 0-for-11. Elected to racing's Hall of Fame two weeks ago, he at least hit the board in the Belmont. His other two starters were fourth-place finisher Indy Storm and Pinpoint.
Afleet Alex paid $4.30, $3.60 and $3.00 on a $2 bet. Andromeda's Hero, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, paid $8.20 and $5.80. Third-place Nolan's Cat, with Norberto Arroyo Jr., paid $7.20 to show.
