Chargers vs. Vikings Analysis & Prediction
The Minnesota Vikings (6-10 last season) and San Diego Chargers (9-7 last season) don’t play each other very often. In their last match-up, the Chargers won 35-17, but this was back in 2007. Both teams had disappointing seasons last year, and of course both will be looking to bounce back in 2011 – 2012. San Diego put the franchise tag on WR Vincent Jackson, and hopefully TE Antonio Gates can stay healthy this season. Fullback Mike Tolbert and RB Ryan Mathews should provide a nice balance for the top passing attack in the NFL.
Last season, the Minnesota Vikings struggled. A big part of this was Brett Favre’s 19 INT’s with only 11 TD’s passing. For 2011, the Vikings signed Donovan McNabb and drafted Christian Ponder to be his back-up. McNabb should do well in Minnesota and help to create space for Adrian Peterson. Wide receivers Percy Harvin, Michael Jenkins and Bernard Berrian will help McNabb move the ball through the air, but the loss of Sidney Rice is going to hurt them.
Minnesota Vikings vs. San Diego Chargers Point Spread
At the time of this writing, BetOnline Sportsbook, the San Diego Chargers are favored by -9 (Even) on the point spread. Bettors can get +9 (-120) on the Minnesota Vikings.
Over the past few seasons, the San Diego Chargers have become known for bad starts to the regular season. Last year, they started the season 2-5 against fairly weak competition. Although they’re playing at home, I think the 9-point spread is too many points to give up. A touchdown seems more realistic to me, so I’ll be taking the Vikings +9 (-120) at BetOnline.
I also expect the spread to drop as we get closer to game-time, so if you like 9 points, get your bet in now. If you like the Chargers, watch the line movement and see if you can save a point or point and a half. San Diego ended up with the #1 offense (395.6 YPG) and defense (271.6 YPG) in the NFL last season, but they didn’t make the playoffs due to their slow start and awful performance on special teams.
The Minnesota Vikings improved this off-season, and they’re motivated to show it. Adrian Peterson ran for almost 300 yards the last time he played against the Chargers, but of course that’s a crazy statistic we can’t ever expect. With that said, I do expect him to get a lot of touches in this game, good for 100+ rushing yards. McNabb struggled last season, but he’s been given a fresh start in Minnesota. I expect the Chargers to win this game outright, but I don’t think they’ll cover the -9 point spread.
I’m betting on the Minnesota Vikings at +9 (-120) at BetOnline.com.
Chargers vs. Vikings Money Line
The current money line on the Chargers is -400, while the Vikings are +330 at the BetOnline Sportsbook.
Although the Chargers typically start the season off slow, they’re a team with great potential who should get the win at home against the Vikings. I’d bet the Chargers on the money line against the Vikings, but at -400 we’re better off adding this to a parlay to increase the payout odds.
For the Vikings, unless Peterson runs for 200+ yards (obviously unlikely), I don’t see any way they take this win outright. Even at +330, I don’t see the value in a money line bet here.
Vikings vs. Chargers Total (Over/Under) Betting Odds
The over/under in the Vikings vs. Chargers game is set at 41 points and you can bet on the game total at the BetOnline Sportsbook. I like the over in this game a lot and will be betting on the over. San Diego puts up a lot of points and I think they’ll be good for at least 24-27 in week 1 at home while the Vikings should also be able to put up 17-20 points with McNabb and Peterson.
Bet on Minnesota Vikings vs. San Diego Chargers
I’m going to bet on the Minnesota Vikings at +9 and the over 41 points. If I had to bet on one pick only I’d take the over 41, as I think that’s definitely a safer pick in this game. San Diego has the potential to blow-out the Vikings in this game, but I don’t think that’ll happen considering the early season struggles that the Chargers have been facing the past few seasons.
Best Point Spread Odds

Betting Theory - Wager against road teams when they are laying more than 7 points. Over 62% NFL handicapping angle since 1997!
Since free agency started depending on which side of the fence you are on the NFL has been cursed or blessed with parity. Any given team can not only cover the spread each week, but can actually grab a straight up win
We should have titled this “Don’t bet on road favorites giving more than 7 points.
We have always preached to look for value in the underdog in any NFL point spread wager and preferably a home pointspread dog, which has historically been an even better bet.
So why would any bettor with any knowledge on how to handicap the NFL place any bets on a big road fav? If you answered “they wouldn’t”, then you are not in the class of the many weekend handicappers (squares) that continue to lay their action down on road favorites and you’re probably not sending your bookies kids to college.
Vikings Broncos Betting Lines
Since 1997 there have been 104 games that the odds maker set a line on a road team of 7 or more points. In those games the road betting line favorite has a record of 38-63-3 for a 37.6 winning percentage. If you wagered against the road team in these situations you’d have been cashing your ticket at the betting window over 62% of the time. Last season was one of the most profitable for this wagering angle as the underdog won 8 of the 10 games.
